Who Should Attend?
- Pony Clubbers & Trail riders who want to try foxhunting for the first time.
- Hilltoppers who want to improve their riding skills or move up to Second Flight.
- Second and First Flight riders who want to become more confident.
- Green Horses new to hunting or new to coops and natural obstacles.
- Parents, foot followers, social members & potential or new members who want to learn more!
Schedule of Events:
Day 1 (Sat): 2 Mounted Sessions at Millington Stables, (~1.5hrs each), grouped by levels. (Sat AM): Flat exercises and (for advanced group) gymnastics in the ring to improve position, control, confidence & riders’ security. (Sat PM): Riding in fields, narrow trails, & hills, exercises (such as rein-backs, turn on the forehand) for gates and reversing field while negotiating trappy terrain, and, for the advanced group, riding banks, ditches, streams, coops, panels & natural obstacles. Safety and confidence building will be stressed.
Day 2 (Sun AM): Mock Hunt at the Kennels (or visit hounds in the pen for green horses)
(Sun PM): Lunch & Information Session with Masters and Hunt Staff (hunting conditions, scent, horn calls, staff roles, protocol, traditions and attire will be discussed)
Clinicians: Joy Crompton, MFH and Liz King, MFH
Both Joy Crompton and Liz King have been hunting with Farmington Hunt for over 20 years and are currently joint MFHs. They have each schooled many young horses in the hunt field, and served as Field Masters. Joy is currently Honorary Whipper-in, and Liz the 3rd flight Field Master, each hunting three time a week during hunt season. Joy and Liz bring a wealth of professional experience and expertise. As event riders, they have started many young horses and brought them through the Preliminary level. Joy won the team Adult Preliminary Championship at the Kentucky Horse Park and Liz the Novice and Training Adult Team Championships at the Virginia Horse Center. They have both trained with Jimmy Wofford who is a world-renowned expert at how to navigate cross country jumps and terrain safely. Joy and Liz share their extensive knowledge by teaching students for the hunt field and combined training competitions.
